Forget the Conventional Wisdom:

Here are Five Truths that can help you Succeed in College and Life

By Keith Forrest, Assistant Professor of Communication at ACCC

1.      You can transfer to any college you want.  Stockton is not your only choice.  Don’t limit yourself.  There are ACCC graduates that have transferred to Ivy League schools.  Here are 5 schools other than Stockton to consider:

Rowan University (35 miles from Mays Landing)

·    Best communication school on the east coast.

·    Excellent education and engineering programs.

Rutgers-Camden (45 miles from Mays Landing)

·    Only law school in South Jersey.

·    Center for Children and Childhood Studies.

Temple University (50 miles from Mays Landing)

·    130 different bachelor’s degrees; 28th largest university in America.

·    2nd best communication school on the east coast.

Georgian Court (65 miles from Mays Landing)

·    All-Women’s college: benefits of single-sex education.

·    Small, nurturing environment and beautiful campus.

The College of New Jersey (80 miles from Mays Landing)

·    The “Ivy League” school of the state university system.

·    Recognized nationally by U.S. News and World Report and other publications.

2.      Take challenging courses at ACCC.  Don’t just take professors you heard are “easy.”  Difficult courses help prepare you for the environment you will face when you transfer to a     4-year-school, and in the working world.

3.      There is no such thing as a practical major.  Major in something you feel passionately about.  Most students don’t work in their major when they graduate anyway.  If you major in something you don’t like, you will have a miserable college experience.

4.      Doing an internship greatly increases the likelihood that you will get a job when you graduate.  Internships give you experience and provide you with contacts in your field.

5.   Employers are primarily interested in three skills when interviewing a college graduate, regardless of your major.

1.       Oral Communication Ability (how well you speak).

2.       Written Communication Ability (how well you write).

3.       Analytical Ability (how well you solve problems).
