Introduction to Mass Media
Instructor: Keith Forrest
Quizzes
Since this is a class about the mass media, it is important to keep up with current events. You must be paying attention to news coverage to be able to discuss it intelligently. Since newspapers are the media that people in the 18-24 year old group consume the least , our quizzes will focus on newspapers. To understand how newspapers work, it is important to get exposure to different newspapers.
Quizzes will be based upon the coverage in a particular newspaper on a specific day. It would be best if you could get your hands on a hard copy of the paper so you can see how it is laid out. But you can get the information you need for the quiz from the newspaper's website.
Quizzes will always be administered right at the beginning of class. They will last 15 minutes and will test you on factual information about a particular issue of a specific newspaper. The questions will be short answer. I will be asking you basic questions about the major news stories in that day's paper. For example, the USA Today lists 8 sections on its website: home, news, travel, money, sports, life, tech, and weather. You are responsible for knowing the major stories from each section except for travel and weather. The quiz questions won't cover small details of the stories. They will be restricted to the headline and lead paragraph of the story. For example, for the May 19 th issue of the USA Today , I might have asked you, “What major U.S. city is holding an important election tomorrow?” The answer would be New Orleans . Another example, from the sports section, I might have asked, “Who is Barbaro?” The answer would be the “race horse who is trying to win the 2 nd race in the Triple Crown.”
You will take a number of quizzes in this class. The first quiz will be about the syllabus. This will be the one quiz of the semester that will be open book. All the others will be closed book. Quizzes cannot be made up. But your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Here is the quiz schedule for the summer:
