Preparing Drone Data Technicians

This website is dedicated to sharing the results of a NSF-ATE project project grant focused on designing and developing course and program curricula and supporting instructional deliverables to prepare students for careers as small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) data collection technicians. Designed for community colleges, this resource aims to provide guidance, best practices, and curriculum materials to institutions either with or in the process of creating similar programs. We hope this site fosters collaboration and innovation among educators working to expand learning opportunities in this growing field.

An sUAS data collection technician uses drones equipped with advanced passive and active sensors to gather various types of data. They are responsible for:

  • Acting as the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC)
  • Flight planning within regulatory guidelines
  • Field calibrating sensors and validating data quality
  • Preparing and securely managing data for analysis
  • Managing and processing large datasets
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance and repairs

These technicians ensure the data collected is accurate, secure, and ready for further analysis across a range of applications.
