About Beacons by the Sea

Beacons by the Sea is a public arts and fund-raising project that will place 73 fanciful artist-decorated lighthouses in prominent locations throughout New Jersey's Atlantic and Cape May counties during the summer of 2003.

Sale of the works at auction in August 2003 will benefit Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC), the ACCC Foundation, Culture and Heritage offices of Cape May and Atlantic counties, and arts and education organizations in the two-county region.

Absecon Lighthouse

Cape May Lighthouse

Two different lighthouse designs are planned, one modeled after the Cape May and Absecon Lighthouses and another after Hereford Lighthouse in Wildwood. The lighthouses will be made of fiberglass and stand approximately four to five feet high.

Local artists, selected by a panel of jurors, will paint/create the unique sculptures. The Lighthouse Festival will culminate at the end of the summer with a public event, dinner and an auction at which art lovers can bid on the finished pieces.

The Atlantic Cape Community College Office of Advancement Programs will provide project oversight for The Lighthouse Festival.

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse

Lighting the Way for Arts and Education

The project will provide an opportunity for Atlantic and Cape May counties to work together on an activity that will raise funds to support scholarships, books and academic programs and promote the arts, tourism, and interest in historical sites. It will also serve to enhance a sense of community between the two counties.
