Work Information Job title: Assistant Professor of English Key responsibilities: To help students increase their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in order to succeed in college and in life. To encourage active learning, critical and creative thinking, and polished academic writing. Teaching styles: Student-centered instruction, some choice of reading assignments, choice of writing assignments, choice of presentation styles, choice of learning partner projects; concentration on creating a community of learners in a very active classroom; use of a variety of instructional methods designed to accommodate different learning styles and to stimulate higher thinking skills, critical reading skills, academic writing skills and polished presentation skills. Activities to Expect in My Classrooms: Formal and informal graded and non-graded public discourse activities; formal and informal graded and non-graded writing assignments; formal and informal graded and non-graded reading assignments; active listening assignments both objective and subjective; collaborative group tasks and problem solving; some student choice of reading assignments; some student generated criteria for evaluation; learning partner presentations; student generated discussion of reading material; students sharing papers and reading journals; peer editing, peer review and peer evaluation; student self assessment; research and documentation; preparation of visual aides for class presentation; rubrics used for inventory of writing progress; active reading; analytical, critical and creative responses to readings.
