Defining Visual Balance or Visual Weight
Balance in art is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp. In art, balance is defined as the distribution of visual weight in a work of art and results in variations of symmetry.
There are four types of balance:
- symmetrical - a work of art that is exactly the same on both sides - it is absolutely balanced or symmetrical
- approximately symmetrical balance (sometimes called bilateral or nearly symmetrical) - a work of art that is nearly the balanced on both sides
- asymmetrical - a work of art that is completely different on both sides - it is not balanced
- radial - a work of art that has a center point and objects come or the composition originates from (radiates from) the center (like spokes on a wheel)
